Qatar Pauses LNG Tanker Movements Amidst Yemen Airstrikes
Qatar has reportedly halted the transit of liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait following US-led airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, reported Bloomberg.
Ship-tracking data reveals that at least five Qatari LNG vessels heading towards the Red Sea’s southern end have been paused since Friday.
The Combined Military Forces, including the US and UK navies, advised merchant shipping to avoid the southern Red Sea due to increased risks after the airstrikes.
While the Houthis haven’t targeted gas-carrying vessels since mid-November, Qatar’s decision highlights the heightened risks in the region.
As a major LNG exporter, Qatar typically uses the Red Sea route to supply Europe, constituting around 13% of Western European consumption last year.
The move is expected to delay LNG shipments to Europe, but current stock levels, subdued industrial demand, and mild weather are likely to prevent immediate shortages. European gas prices remain near the lowest levels since August despite the increased geopolitical tensions.
